Rally comes up just short in five set loss to Mayville State

MAYVILLE, N.D. – Dickinson State forced a fifth set with a furious rally after falling behind two sets to none to begin the match, but Mayville State was able to pull out the win at home, taking the final frame 15-10.

Three Blue Hawks finished with double digit kills, led by McKenzie Moser (18) with Makyah Albrecht (13) and Brooklyn Wyllie (10) not far behind. Lexi Puev tied her career high with seven kills to go along with three digs.

After the Comets took the first two sets by narrow margins (25-23 and 25-18), the Blue Hawks started their comeback. Trailing 16-13 late in the third set, DSU used a pair of Comet errors, and kills by Moser and Wyllie, to take a 17-16 lead. Moser extended the lead to 18-16 but MSU responded with two points of their own to tie the set again. A 7-4 Blue Hawk run the rest of the way was capped by back-to-back kills by Madi Wahl and Rylee Kogolshak as Dickinson State stayed alive in the match, 2-1.

The fourth set was similar to the third, with DSU taking their first lead of the set since 1-0 when a Comet error made it 21-20 Blue Hawks. Dickinson State then went on a 4-1 run to win their second set of the match, with Moser and Wahl collecting consecutive kills to end it.

The comeback run ended there, unfortunately, as Mayville State controlled most of the fifth set en route to a 15-10 victory.

The Blue Hawks now return home for their final homestand of the season as they take on Bellevue and Dakota State on October 27 and 28.
