Blue Hawks drop heartbreaker on Senior Night

DICKINSON, N.D. - Double-doubles from senior Mackenna Johnson (18 kills, 20 digs), senior Bailey Pearcy (63 assists, 18 digs) and sophomore McKenzie Moser (16 kills, 13 digs), and a 2-0 match lead, were not enough as Dickinson State (4-22, 2-11 NSAA) fell 3-2 (21-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-10) to Mayville State University (16-17, 7-7 NSAA).

Dickinson State came out on fire on a night that the Blue Hawks' four seniors were honored, taking the first two sets by identical 25-21 scores. After falling behind 4-1 early in set two, the Blue Hawks closed the gap with kills from Johnson and Madi Wahl to tie the score at 5-5. The teams traded points to 10-10 before DSU scored the next three points to take a 13-10 lead. The lead changed hands again when MSU took a 15-14 lead and a block, but DSU answered back, taking a 18-17 advantage on an ace from Haydin Henschel. DSU didn't trail again in the set as they fought off any Mayville State rallies and got back to back kills from Moser and Brooklyn Wyllie to close it out.

Unforutnately for the Blue Hawks, Mayville State was able to rally back and take the next three sets to win the match. Wahl and Wyllie both joined Johnson and Moser with double figure kills with 15 and 11, respectively. Senior libero Jenna Swope had a career-high 40 digs on her senior night to go along with Pearcy's career-high tying effort in assists.
