Blue Hawks down Trojans for first NSAA win

DICKINSON, N.D. - The Dickinson State volleyball team (3-15, 1-4 NSAA) withstood a back-and-forth match to take down (RV) Dakota State (11-11,2-3 NSAA), 3-2 (25-15, 13-25, 26-24, 21-25, 15-7), on Saturday afternoon in Scott Gym.

Dakota State jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in set one, but it was all Blue Hawks from there as Dickinson State raced to a 25-15 set one victory. Set two went the opposite way as the visitors from Madision, S.D. blitzed the Blue Hawks early and coasted to a 25-13 victory to tie the match 1-1.

Set three looked to be going the same as set two, as Dakota State jumped out to a 19-12 lead, but a furious Blue Hawk rally tied the score at 19-19 on a kill from setter Bailey Pearcy. DSU took a 24-21 lead on a kill from Brooklyn Wyllie, but the Trojans scored the next three points to force the set into extra points. Back-to-back kills by Katie Collum and Madi Wahl, however, ended the set and gave DSU a 2-1 lead in the match.

Set four was tight the whole way, with neither team holding a lead larger than four points, but DaSU was able to pull away at the end, taking the set 25-21 and forcing a fifth, and deciding, set.

Dickinson State controlled the final set from the beginning, jumping out to a quick 4-1 lead on a Trojan error, and cruised to a 15-7 win on a kill by Collum, and 3-2 match victory.
