Volleyball earns a split on day 1 of Labor Day Classic

BELLEVUE, NE - The Dickinson State Volleyball team (1-6, 0-0) went 1-1 on day 1 of the GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic.
Game 1
The Blue Hawks used a balanced effort to take down Olivet Nazarene (0-5,0-0) in the first match of the GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic in Bellevue, NE. Mackenna Johnson led the team with 13 kills, while McKenzie Moser chipped in 10, and Brooklyn Wyllie and Haydin Henschel added 9 each. Bailey Pearcy had a season-high 39 assists to help pilot the offense.
The first set was tight the whole way, but DSU couldn't quite close the gap as Olivet Nazarene never trailed taking set one 25-20.
Sets two and three were the complete opposite, with DSU holding the lead throughout both sets. The Blue Hawks flipped the script in set two winning 25-20 and took set three 25-23.
Olivet Nazarene took an early 5-2 lead in set 4, but 3 Wahl kills combined with a couple Tiger errors gave DSU the lead for good. The Blue Hawks took their biggest lead of the match going up 21-12 on a kill by Johnson and cruised the rest of the way for a 25-20 final.
Overall, the Blue Hawks outhit the Tigers .151 to .141. DSU held the edge at the net putting up 7 total blocks to ONU's 2. Four Blue Hawks recorded 10 or more digs, with Pearcy, Henschel, and Johnson joining Jenna Swope in that category.
Game 2
Junior Jacklyn Belfourd had a season-high 8 kills, McKenzie Moser had 8 of her own, and Madi Wahl pounded 12 but it wasn't enough to push the Blue Hawks past Benedictine College in the afternoon match.
DSU jumped out to an early lead commanding the first set and leading start to finish to take a 1-0 lead over the Ravens. Wahl had five of her kills in the first set alone.
However, it was all BC from there as the Ravens led for all but 7 plays the rest of the way to win the next three sets and the match.
Overall, the Ravens outhit the Blue Hawks .331 to .156 and had 8 aces to DSU's 5. Bailey Pearcy added 30 assists and 10 digs for the Blue Hawks for her second double-double of the day and third on the season.

The Blue Hawk volleyball team returns to action tomorrow, September 3rd, for day 2 action at the GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic. They will take on Avila University at 8:00 am MT and (RV) McPherson College at 10:00 am MT.
