Blue Hawks capture record-setting fifth straight NSAA title

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Dickinson State women's indoor track and field team earned their fifth consecutive North Star Athletic Association title on Sunday with a dominating performance on Sunday.

The Blue Hawks claimed nine running titles and captured all seven individual titles Sunday at Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex on the campus of NCAA Division I South Dakota State University. Their team total of 296.5 points set a new NSAA Conference meet record, crushing the old record of 216.5 points set by DSU last year.

Kaitlyn McColly was named to the NSAA Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Meet after scoring 33 points.  She won the pentathlon, long jump, triple jump and earned a sixth place finish in the high jump. Wrenzi Wrzesinski was the league Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Meet.  She scored 32.5 points in the running events, winning the 60-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles, and was a member of the winning 4 x 400-meter relay team for the Blue Hawks.

The North Star Athletic Association women's indoor track & field head coaches voted Kori Nagel and Wrzesinski as the Most Valuable Athlete for the 2022-2023 indoor season. Head coach Shayne Wittkopp was named NSAA Coach of the Year after leading the Blue Hawks to a record setting fifth straight title.

Along the way to their title, the Blue Hawks earned five more NSAA Conference meet records. Wrzesinski set a new record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.61, beating a record set by McColly last year. Madison Wahl set a new pole vault record at 3.72 meters while Nagel set a new mark in the shot put with a throw of 14.91 meters, shattering the old record of 13.82. McColly highlighted her weekend with a record setting performance in the Pentathlon, scoring 3,632 points, besting the old record of 3,376 points set back in 2017. The last record that fell was beaten by the Blue Hawks' 4 x 800 meter relay team, consisting of Jewel Olson, Natalie Lile, Lauren Taylor, and Piper Perez who's time of 10:18.01 beat the old time by over five seconds.
