Dickinson, N.D. - Dickinson State secured a thrilling 65-63 victory over Valley City State on Friday evening at Scott Gymnasium, capped by Tinley Pierson's last-second heroics. The game featured seven ties and five lead changes, with both teams battling to the final buzzer.

The Blue Hawks (7-10, 2-4 NSAA) set the tone early with a 19-16 lead after the first quarter, propelled by efficient inside play and contributions from Kayden Steele, who led the team with 24 points and eight rebounds. Dickinson State extended their advantage to 33-24 at halftime, aided by a balanced offensive approach and a defensive effort that limited Valley City State to 20% shooting in the second quarter.

The Vikings (9-9, 1-5 NSAA) responded in the third quarter, outscoring Dickinson State 23-18 behind Ashlyn Diemert's hot shooting. Diemert finished with a game-high 24 points, including two three-pointers, and helped Valley City State cut the deficit to four points heading into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter, the Blue Hawks and Vikings traded scores, with neither team able to gain a decisive edge. Samantha Oase provided critical free throws down the stretch for Dickinson State, finishing with 14 points and six rebounds. With the score tied at 63 and just seconds remaining, Pierson grabbed a defensive rebound off a missed shot by Diemert. Following a timeout, Pierson delivered the game-winning basket on a turn-around in the lane as the clock expired, sending the Blue Hawk faithful into a frenzy.

Dickinson State shot 43.6% from the field and converted 82.4% of their free-throw attempts, demonstrating poise in critical moments. Valley City State struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 15.8% of their three-point attempts, and was unable to capitalize on second-chance opportunities despite a 44-40 edge in rebounds.
