Dickinson State splits with VCSU to close regular season

Valley City, N.D. – Dickinson State split their final North Star Athletic Association series, 2-2, with Valley City State over the weekend. Both teams picked up wins on each day, with DSU winning both game ones and VCSU picking up wins in the game twos.

Game One – DSU 5 VCSU 1

Dickinson State got a complete game gem from Dallis Mitchell, as she went 7 innings allowing just one run on seven hits to earn the victory.

Mitchell also went 2-3 with a double at the plate, while HaiLeigh Davis added a pair of hits as well. Consecutive bases-loaded walks in the top of the first inning put the Blue Hawks in front 2-0, and RBI hits from Davis and Cassy Loa helped extend the lead in the fourth inning.

VCSU scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-out single.

Game Two – VCSU 6 DSU 0

DSU was held scoreless in game two, as they fell 6-0 and gathered three hits, all singles.

Kiley Hubby went 1-2 with a walk to lead the offense, but Valley City State scored in four of their six times to bat to earn the split.

Game Three – DSU 10 VCSU 5

Dickinson State scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to turn a thriller into a comfortable victory in game three.

After VCSU scored two-run in the bottom of the seventh inning to force an extra frame, DSU got a leadoff double by Jai Maddox-Hernandez to get their rally going. A passed ball and a wild pitch scored Maddox-Hernandez to give DSU the lead, and Dallis Mitchell, Kiley Hubby, and Jessa Duggan all added RBI hits to provide plenty of relief.

Mitchell earned her second victory of the weekend, going 7.1 innings and allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits while throwing just 74 total pitches.

Cassy Loa, Mitchell, Hubby, Duggan, and Maddox-Hernandez all had multiple hits for the Blue Hawks as they struck out just three times as a team.

Game Four – VCSU 8 DSU 6

DSU held early leads of 2-0 and 5-3 but couldn't hold on as VCSU salvaged the weekend split with an 8-6 win in game four.

Jessa Duggan went 3-4 to lead the offense, while Kara Conway went 2-4 with a home run, but 13 Viking hits, including two home runs from first baseman Logan Gronberg, helped VCSU complete the comeback victory in the series finale.
