Blue Hawks earn 3-1 NSAA series win over Mayville State

Dickinson, N.D. – Dickinson State softball hosted Mayville State over the weekend, as the two teams honored legendary Mayville State coach Scott Berry and his battle with cancer. The Blue Hawks won both games on Sunday, after a Saturday split, to win the series.

Game One – DSU 6 MSU 5

Dickinson State erased an early 5-0 deficit by scoring six unanswered runs, including a walk off double from Cassidy Venner in the eighth inning, to steal the game one victory.

Trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the second inning, the Blue Hawks got an RBI single from Kara Conway to start the comeback.

RBI hits from Venner, Cassy Loa, and Kiley Hubby got the Blue Hawks within one before Dallis Mitchell doubled home Loa in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out to tie the game and force extra innings.

After a scoreless top of the eighth from DSU pitcher Allison Eldredge, DSU got a single from Karissa Comer and pinch runner Jessa Duggan stole second to set up Venner's heroics.

Eldredge earned the win in relief, going 6.2 innings and allowing no runs on just two hits while striking out nine and walking just three.

Game Two – MSU 5 DSU 2

Dickinson State was held to just two runs on five hits in game two as Mayville State evened the series at one game apiece after day one.

The Blue Hawks' two runs came on a sixth inning RBI single from Dallis Mitchell and a seventh inning home run from Karissa Comer, but never really threatened as Mayville State answered back with runs each time.

Game Three – DSU 7 MSU 3

Dickinson State used three first inning runs to take control early as they led from start to finish to kick off day two with a win.

Bailey Hansen went 3-4 to lead the offense as the Blue Hawks scattered 12 hits and played errorless defense to control the game.

Alexa Kappel and Allison Eldredge combined to hold MSU to just three runs on nine hits while striking out six and walking just two.

Game Four – DSU 4 MSU 2

Dickinson State worked around three errors with a fifth-inning rally to take game four, 4-2, and the series, 3-1, on Sunday.

Dallis Mitchell went 2-3 and drove in two runs, including the go-ahead run in the fifth, to lead DSU to the win while also throwing a complete game in the circle.

Mitchell scattered nine hits over seven innings, allowing just two runs while striking out seven and walking three.
