Walk-off win in game two gives DSU softball a split on day three in Tucson

Tucson, Ariz. – Dickinson State split a morning double header in Tucson on Sunday, dropping their first game, 13-1, to Madonna University before taking game two, 3-2, again St. Francis (IL).

Game One – MU 13 DSU 1

Dallis Mitchell drove in a run with an RBI-single in the first inning to give DSU a 1-0 lead, but Madonna responded with 13 unanswered runs to take the mercy-rule victory. Dickinson State struggled to throw strikes, walking 10 batters and hitting another, leading to a lot of traffic on the base paths.

On the offensive side, DSU managed just three hits, all singles, while walking only two times. Mitchell added a stolen base as she went 1-2 with an RBI for the game.

Game Two DSU 3 SFU 2

A walk-off double by HaiLeigh Davis in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Dickinson State a 3-2 win over St. Francis in the final game of the day, their sixth in three days.

St. Francis led 2-0 through four and a half innings, but in the bottom of the fifth, Kara Conway and Davis produced back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game at 2-2. Neither team scored in the sixth, and Dallis Mitchell completed her second complete game in as many days with a scoreless top of the seventh to set up Davis' heroics.

Karissa Comer led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second when Mitchell reached on an error by the SFU first baseman. A sacrifice bunt by Conway moved both runners into scoring position and Davis drove a 2-2 pitch into center field for the win.

Davis went 3-4 with 2 2B and 2 RBI to lead the offense, while Mitchell went 7 innings and allowed 2 runs on 7 hits while striking out 7 and walking one to earn the win.
