30-hit attack powers Blue Hawks to doubleheader sweep over Mayville State

Sagan Osborne | Dickinson State Sports Information Director

Dickinson, N.D. – Dickinson State swept Saturday's double header against Mayville State, winning game one, 6-4, before using a huge comeback in game two to win, 12-9.

GAME 1

A four-run fourth inning for the Blue Hawks erased an early 4-1 deficit as Dickinson State took game one against the Comets.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, the Blue Hawks got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when Rhea Paiva singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, was sacrificed to third by Kara Conway, and scored on another passed ball to tie the score at 1-1.

The Comets answered back with three more runs in the second inning, but in the bottom of the third inning the DSU offense came to life. Conway reached on an error to start the inning and came around to score on a double by Ari Martinez. After a flyout, Dallis Mitchell tripled, scoring Martinez, and came home one batter later on an RBI single by Cassidy Venner. Alexa Kappel doubled to move Venner over to third and the Blue Hawks took the lead 5-4 on an RBI ground out by Kamryn Kuntz.

The Blue Hawks added an insurance run on an RBI single by Martinez in the sixth, but it was unnecessary as Kappel didn't allow another run the rest of the way as she earned the win going the complete 7.0 innings and allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits, while striking out 7, and walking 3.

GAME 2

A roller coaster game two saw Rhea Paiva and Ari Martinez both go 4-4, the Blue Hawks collect 17 hits total, and back-to-back-to-back home runs as DSU earned a dramatic 12-9 victory to complete the Saturday sweep.

Mayville State again jumped on top 1-0 in the top of the first, but again Dickinson State had an answer as Rhea Paiva started another game with a hit before scoring on an RBI groundout by Kara Conway. RBI singles by Conway, Martinez, and Dallis Mitchell in the third inning put the Blue Hawks in front, 4-1.

MSU immediately responded with seven hits and eight runs over the next two innings to take the lead back, 9-4. In the bottom of the fifth, however, the DSU bats really got going. Martinez singled, Mitchell walked, and Cassidy Venner drove in the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. After a flyout for the second out, the fireworks began. Pinch hitter Madeline Peralta homered to left field driving in Mitchell and making it 9-8 MSU and Ashlee Potter and Hailey Enriquez followed her with home runs of their own to give DSU a dramatic 10-9 lead. A triple by Conway and an RBI single for Martinez provided the seventh run of the inning for DSU and an RBI single from Emma Woodworth in the sixth provided the final insurance run for the Blue Hawks.
