Minot, N.D. – A huge comeback in game one led Dickinson State to a split with Valley City State on Saturday in Minot. The series was originally scheduled to be played at the brand new Sanford Sports Complex in Dickinson, but weather forced the games to be moved indoors to the Minot State inflatable dome.

GAME 1

A five-run bottom of the fifth inning erased a four-run deficit created by a five-run top of the fifth inning by VCSU to give DSU the dramatic game one victory.

Hailey Enriquez gave DSU the early lead with an RBI single that scored Rhea Paiva, who led the Blue Hawks with a 3-4 day, to make it 1-0 DSU. Paiva added an RBI single of her own in the second inning, scoring Dallis Mitchell who reached on a walk to start the inning, making it 2-0 Blue Hawks,

An RBI single for VCSU in the third inning cut the lead to one before the fifth inning fireworks. A two-RBI single and a three run home run accounted for the five Viking runs in the fifth inning, giving VCSU a 6-2 lead after four and a half innings.

Ari Martinez started the DSU fifth with a single and advanced to third on a two-base error on an Enriquez fly ball, but pinch runner Bailey Pepper was thrown out trying to score on a ground ball by Madeline Peralta. RBI singles from Mitchell and Kara Conway made it 6-4 VCSU and Cassidy Venner scored another run with a sacrifice fly to get DSU to within one. Arjana Eilers followed that up with an RBI single to tie the game before Paiva came through with another single to score her after a steal of second, giving DSU the lead.

Eilers threw the final 2.2 innings in relief for the win, allowing 0 runs on 3 hits while striking out one and walking none.

GAME 2

The VCSU offense exploded in game two to take a 14-2 five inning victory in game two.

The Vikings held a 9-0 advantage before a bases loaded hit-by-pitch of Hope Fath pushed across the first DSU run in the bottom of the third inning. Paiva drove in another run with a bunt single in the fifth for the last DSU run. Hailey Enriquez and Kennedy Kuntz also gathered hits for the Blue Hawks in the loss.
