Bio

Derek Selvig enters into his third year as the DSU Head Men's Basketball Coach, with a new addition of a Junior Varsity / Developmental program.

Over the past two seasons, Coach Selvig has had multiple players receive All- Conference honors. During the 2021-2022 season, freshmen forward, John Evans received 2nd Team All-Conference honors, senior guard, Travon Hamilton received Champions of Character award and senior guard, Bryce Knox received All-Conference Honorable Mention. Coach Selvig’s first year at the helm of DSU Men’s Basketball program, Selvig coached three-time Player of the Week, NSAA Newcomer of the Year and All-Conference 2nd Team guard Bryce Knox. Along with Knox, senior forward Jalon Tinnin received Champion of Character honors and senior forward, Ajdin Toskic received player of the week honors.


Coach Selvig started coaching in 2016 at Montana Tech University as an assistant men's basketball coach. During his time at Tech, he assisted the program to the most wins in a single season for the first time in twenty years. Selvig also assisted in coaching the Orediggers to back-to-back winning season. The Orediggers also defeated a division one team which was the first time in school history.


Prior to coaching, Selvig played overseas in Gotha, Germany with the BiG Oettinger Rockets. After returning to the states, Derek gained his first coaching experience as an assistant coach for Billings West High School in Billings, MT.


In 2007, he signed to play at the University of Montana. In college, the 7-foot power forward helped lead the Grizzlies to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. Selvig finished his career with 844 points and 560 rebounds along with averaging 40% from the three-point line.
Selvig is a native of Glendive, MT where he was an all-state player for Dawson County High SchooI. During his time as a Red Devil, he recorded a 44-4 record his junior and senior seasons playing for his father Doug. Selvig reached the Montana Class "A" State Tournament all four years of his high school career. Selvig was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Montana in his senior season and was one of the top-150 players in the nation in high school.
