Blue Hawks fall to Comets in Mayville

Mayville, N.D. – Dickinson State fell short in a 72-68 loss to Mayville State on Friday night at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. The Blue Hawks controlled much of the first half, leading 33-27 at the break, but struggled to maintain their edge as the Comets surged late.

Aidan Fishell led Dickinson State with 13 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the field while adding five rebounds. Cordell Stinson and John Evans each contributed 11 points, with Stinson hitting a key three-pointer early and Evans providing a spark off the bench. Kose Egbule pulled down eight rebounds but struggled from the field, finishing 3-of-13.

The Blue Hawks shot 39.1% from the floor and 32.0% from beyond the arc but left points at the free-throw line, making just 10-of-17 attempts. They capitalized on Mayville State's turnovers, converting them into 14 points, but were outscored in the paint 38-26.

Mayville State turned the game around in the second half, shooting 48.0% from the field after halftime. Devin Griffin led the Comets with 19 points, making 6-of-7 shots and going 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. London Williams controlled the boards with 19 rebounds while adding 13 points.

Dickinson State saw its largest lead at 10 points late in the first half, but Mayville State clawed back, tying the game multiple times before taking control in the final minutes. With the score tied at 66, Artis Chapman's layup gave the Comets a two-point lead. After a missed shot by the Blue Hawks, Mayville State secured a crucial offensive rebound, leading to free throws that extended the margin.

Fishell made a layup with one second remaining to cut the deficit to two, but Mayville State sealed the win at the line with a pair of free throws from Griffin. The Blue Hawks dropped to 14-9 overall and 9-2 in conference play, while the Comets improved to 15-9 and 6-5 in league action.
