DSU men use balanced scoring effort to take down Waldorf

Dickinson, N.D. – Dickinson State used a balanced scoring effort to take down Waldorf University, 78-66, in Scott Gym on Friday and move into third place in the tight North Star Athletic Association standings.

Jaiden Wright (14 points) and Aidan Fishell (13 points) led the way off the bench for DSU, as Trey Stevens scored 11, and Kose Egbule (8 points, 10 rebounds), Jake Daniel (8 points, 6 rebounds), Josiah Haaland (8 points, 4 rebounds), and Cordell Stinson (8 points) all had identical scoring columns.

As has been the case many times this season, Dickinson State jumped out to an early lead, leading 6-0 three minutes into the game. DSU has struggled to maintain their early leads at times this season, but tonight they turned it into a wire-to-wire victory in front of their home fans. The lead got as high as 13, 30-17, with 3:50 left in the half, but Waldorf was able to close the gap to eight at the half, 35-27.

In the second half, Waldorf clawed all the way back to 43-42 on a basket with just over 14 minutes remaining, but DSU responded with a quick 6-0 run to regain control of the contest. The Warriors again made it a one score game, 57-54, with seven minutes remaining, but a Stinson three on the next possession pushed the lead back to six. The Blue Hawks had an answer for each Waldorf run in the second half, as they used solid free throw shooting to pull away late.

Both teams pulled down 36 rebounds, but Waldorf turned the ball over 13 times to just nine for the Blue Hawks. As a team, DSU shot 12-20 (60 percent) from long range and 14-17 (82 percent) from the free throw line to pull away in a game where both teams shot over 40 percent from the field.
