Blue Hawk men take down Mayville State, move into tie for first place

Dickinson, N.D. – Dickinson State got double-digit points from five different players on Saturday evening to take down league-leading (RV) Mayville State, 79-63, and now sit in a tie for first place after the first two weekends of North Star Athletic Association play.

The game started out with the teams trading the lead back and forth for the first five minutes, but a bucket by John Evans with 14:45 left in the half gave DSU a lead they would never relinquish. The lead grew as large as 15 before a 5-0 run by the Comets made it a 10-point game at the half.

The lead was never any smaller, as the Blue Hawks came out of the break on fire, scoring the first seven points of the second half to take firm hold on the contest.

Trey Stevens again led the Blue Hawks in scoring, pouring in 18 points and collecting 9 rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double. Evans and Kose Egbule both had 15 points for DSU, while Josiah Haaland and Aiden Fishell each had 10. The only Blue Hawk starter that did not score at least ten points was Cordell Stinson, but he pulled down 7 rebounds, dished 3 assists, and had 2 steals.

Dickinson State again took great care of the ball, turning it over just 6 times in the game while MSU coughed it up 12 times. DSU won the rebounding battle, 42-36, and went 22-27 (82 percent) from the free throw line to seal the win.
