Bio

Jason Thier is entering his fifth season as the Defensive Coordinator at Dickinson State University after joining the program in March of 2018. He is a member of the 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 North Star Conference Championship teams. Following the 2021 season he was named the North Star Athletic Association Assistant-Coach-Of-The-Year. He is beginning his 14th season of coaching in 2022, all at the collegiate level.

In his four seasons coaching at Dickinson State University he has coached one All-American, 12 All–Conference players and one Conference Defensive player-of-the-year. In his time as a Blue Hawk he has led a defensive consistently ranked in the top of the league in scoring defense, 3rd down defense, takeaways, and yards allowed.

Prior to being a Blue Hawk, Thier worked as the Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator for the University of Mary. As a Marauder, he coached one All-American, one Pre-Season Defensive Player of the Year and four All-Conference athletes.

In 2013, Thier was hired as the Inside Linebackers Coach for the University of North Dakota. During his time at the Division 1 level, Thier coached one All-Conference athlete and future NFL player Will Ratelle.

In 2011, Jason was hired at the University of Montana-Western where he served as the Bulldogs Defensive Coordinator. While in Montana, Thier coached two All-Conference athletes and implemented defense that yielded the 2nd ranked pass defense in the conference. In 2012, he helped double Montana Western’s win total and increased takeaways by 13.

Jason got his start at the collegiate level as a graduate assistant coach at Augustana University. During his time as a Viking, Thier was part of a team that won their first playoff game in school history. That 2010 team later went on to win a conference championship and ultimately ended their season ranked 6th in the NCAA Division II Coaches poll with a record of 11-2. In those two seasons, Thier coached and mentored one All-Region and three All-Conference athletes and had a combined win/loss total of 19-5.

Thier earned his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a minor in Education from Truman State University in 2009. While at Truman, Jason was an All-Conference Linebacker, Team Captain, and Team MVP his senior year. Upon graduation, Thier continued on to Augustana College where he earned a Master’s Degree in Education and Teaching in 2011. He is currently pursuing a second masters degree in Sports Administration and Leadership from Dickinson State University.

Jason lives in Dickinson with his wife Brittany and their children Jackson (14), Zoey (10), and Charlotte (1).
