Madler, defense lead Blue Hawks over Mayville State

Mayville, N.D. – Dickinson State (2-0, 1-0 NSAA) got the conference season started on a high note, as they took down Mayville State on the road, 31-7 to move to 1-0 in the league. The Blue Hawks were led by quarterback Will Madler who went 14-27 for 177 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another score.

The action started slowly in the first quarter, with the first three drives ending in punts, but good field position after short punt led to the first Blue Hawk touchdown of the game. Starting from the MSU 25-yard line, it took just one play for DSU to take the lead when Madler used his legs to find a seam in the Comet defense and take it in for the score.

A quick three-and-out by the Blue Hawk defense set up another quick drive by the offense, this time a three-play 26-yard drive capped by a 12-yard touchdown pass from Madler to CJ Stinson to make it 14-0 Blue Hawks.

A Chase Miller 38-yard field goal early in the second quarter made it 17-0 DSU and the score stayed the same into the half.

The Comet defense finally got MSU on the board with a strip sack of Madler that was returned for a score midway through the third quarter, but a pair of touchdown passes from Madler to Cayden Houle and Semaj Clark accounted for the final margin.

Braden Zuroff led the DSU run game with 17 carries for 45 yards, while Stinson caught five passes for 73 yards to led the air attack.

The Blue Hawk defense was swarming again, collecting 10 tackles for loss, including four sacks, led by Riley Waters team-high 9 tackles. Mayville State was only able to gain 97 total yards of offense for the game including just 24 on the ground.
