Mathern, Nygard, and Mitchell receive senior awards

DICKINSON, N.D. – Dickinson State Athletics held its annual Senior Athletic Banquet at the Biesiot Activities Center on Wednesday evening, handing out a pair of special honors to the male and female senior athletes of the year.

The 2023-2024 Dickinson State Loraine Schumacher Female Senior Athlete of the Year was shared by two athletes, as Dallis Mitchell and Tori Nygard were named co-recipients of the annual award.

Mitchell, a senior from Peoria, Arizona started her journey with Dickinson State University in the fall of 2019, and from then, she has left a permanent mark on our athletic program. Her achievements on the softball field speak volumes about her dedication, skill, and unwavering passion for the game. A three-time NSAA All-Conference honoree, she has consistently demonstrated her ability as one of the top players in the conference. Her performances have earned her multiple North Star Player of the Week awards throughout her career at Dickinson State. Her statistics speak for themselves: boasting an impressive .340 career batting average and a formidable .480 career slugging percentage, she has paved her place as one of the most formidable hitters to don the Blue Hawk uniform. She ranks 3rd all-time with 46 career doubles, 4th all-time with 594 career at-bats, 5th all-time with 125 runs batted in, and 8th all-time with 115 runs scored. She has played in 196 Blue Hawk Softball games and has seen herself on the mound, at 1st base, 2nd base, ss, 3rd base and right field. She holds a .989 career field percentage. She is the true definition of a utility player. Moreover, Dallis's dedication to service and leadership is truly commendable. As an integral part of the Dickinson State student body, she has consistently volunteered her time and efforts to uplift the Dickinson community.

Nygard, a senior from Wolf Point, Montana, has spent two years with the Blue Hawks and is a national qualifier in the weight throw and the hammer throw. Her performance and work ethic has been a constant over the last two seasons and has helped her event group become the best in the nation. She held the DSU school record last season. She finished 14th at the NAIA National meet last season in the Hammer throw and has been an All-Conference performer in three events and is in the top ten all time for DSU in the javelin, hammer throw and weight throw.

The 2023-2024 Dickinson State Harry Wienbergen Male Senior Athlete of the Year was awarded to football star Krew Mathern.

Mathern, a 6-3 defensive lineman from Dickinson, N.D. was a four-year starter at defensive end and was a three-time North Star All-Conference player. He finished his Dickinson State career 1st all-time in sacks and 1st in tackles for loss. In the 2022 season he finished second all-time in tackles for loss in a season and 3rd all time for sacks in a season. In the 2022 and 2023 season he was named first team all-conference and was named the Most Valuable Defensive Player of the North Star Athletic Association and was named the overall MVP of the conferenc. In December he was named by the NAIA as a First Team All-American on the defensive line, his second year in a row of being a first team All-American. His work ethic, dedication, and leadership were paramount to the success of the Dickinson State football program.
