Dickinson, N.D. – Dickinson State baseball dropped a pair of one run games to Mayville State on Wednesday, falling 14-13 in game one before dropping game two, 8-7. The Blue Hawks banged out 26 hits across the two games with Wyatt Wilharm (7-9) and Jace Buchanan (6-9) accounting for half of them.

Game One – MSU 14 DSU 13

DSU nearly came back from an eight-run deficit to steal game one, but came up just short of the miracle rally.

Mayville State started the game up 5-0 before the Blue Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the third inning thanks to an RBI triple from Wilharm and an RBI groundout from Ty Farwell, but MSU immediately responded with six runs in the top of the fourth inning to make it 11-2 Comets.

DSU would not go away quietly, however, as they scored five runs of their own to make it 11-7. Kadin Finders started the scoring with an RBI triple to left field that score Logan Braaten, who had walked, and John Michael Gonzalez Jr. followed with an RBI single to score Finder. A pair of singles by Buchanan and Wilharm loaded the bases and Preston Jones completed the rally with an RBI triple to deep right center field, clearing the bases.

Gonzalez Jr. got the Blue Hawks to within two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning with a home run to dead center field, and a sacrifice fly by Jones made it a one run contest in the sixth.

Mayville State got some much needed insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning scoring three runs on two hits and two DSU errors to make it 14-10 heading into the home half of the final frame.

DSU made one last push, coming to within one after Buchanan blasted a three-run home run to deep left center field, but the Comets got Ty Farwell to strike out with the tying run on second base to end the comeback.

Game Two – MSU 8 DSU 7

Mayville State scored two runs with two outs in the seventh inning to stun DSU in game two and take the two-game set.

After MSU jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, DSU immediately responded with three runs of their own with Buchanan and Wilharm each having RBI singles in the frame to make it 3-2 Blue Hawks.

The pair wasn't done there, however, as they both had RBI singles in the second inning to push the DSU lead to 5-2 after two innings of play.

A pair of Mayville State home runs in the fifth inning made it 5-5, and an RBI single later in the inning gave MSU the lead at 6-5 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

An RBI single from Cameron Erickson and an RBI double from Wyatt Wilharm in the fifth and sixth innings put DSU back out in front, 7-6, but Mayville State responded with two two-out runs in the top of the seventh and held DSU scoreless to steal the win.
