Blue Hawks fall to Mayville State in season opening doubleheader

Mayville, N.D. – Dickinson State dropped a pair of 7-inning games to Mayville State to kick off the fall portion of their 2024-2025 schedule. The Comets won game one, 8-2, before holding off a late Blue Hawk rally for a 15-9 win in game two.

Game One – MSU 8 DSU 2

A six-run fourth inning for Mayville State was the difference in the game as DSU couldn't take advantage of four multi-hit efforts in the game one loss.

Jace Buchanan, Ty Farwell, Kadin Finders, and John-Michael Gonzalez Jr. all had a pair of hits for the Blue Hawks in the loss.

Rogelio Gonzalez made his Blue Hawk debut on the mound and retired all six batters he faced in relief to finish the game.

Game Two – MSU 15 DSU 9

Mayville State jumped out to a 12-1 lead over the first three innings before weathering a furious Dickinson State comeback attempt to secure the sweep.

Cameron Erickson got the Blue Hawk scoring started with a solo home run in the third inning, but three runs from Mayville State in the bottom half of the inning made it 12-1 Comets after three innings.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Blue Hawks got an RBI single from Gonzalez Jr. and Moses Dokes followed with a home run to left to cut the lead to 13-4, but another Mayville State home run in the home half of the inning pushed the lead back out to 11, 15-4.

The fifth inning was the best offensive inning for DSU on the day, with the first seven Blue Hawks reaching base safely. Dickinson State scored five runs on four hits in the inning, taking advantage of a walk, a hit by pitch, and an error by Mayville State to keep the rally going. MSU was able to escape the jam with a ground ball double play and held DSU scoreless the rest of the way for the win.
