Blue Hawks split doubleheader with VCSU, win series 3-1

Dickinson, N.D. – Dickinson State split a doubleheader with Valley City State on Saturday, clinching a series win and setting up a rematch in the opening round of the North Star Athletic Association tournament this week. VCSU took game one, 3-1, before DSU responded with a 6-2 victory in game two.

Game One – VCSU 3 DSU 1

Dickinson State jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI bunt single by Keanu Calamayan in the second inning, but that was all they would score as they were held to just four hits the rest of the way and none of them advanced past second base.

Jacob Scully took the tough luck loss, going all six innings and allowing three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out five.

Game Two – DSU 6 VCSU 2

Game two was another back-and-forth affair between the two teams, but four unanswered runs from DSU late in the game proved to be the difference.

Starter Tate Williams put together his best performance in a Blue Hawk uniform, going seven innings and allowing just two runs on eight hits while striking out nine and walking none.

Back-to-back RBI singles from Wyatt Wilharm and Carlos Molina Jr in the third inning put the Blue Hawks in front, but VCSU scored two of their own in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie things up, 2-2.

Keanu Calamayan doubled down the left field line with two outs in the top of the fifth inning to regain the lead, scoring Wilharm who started the two-out rally with a triple to left field. DSU added some insurance runs in the eighth inning as Kaiden Reeve and Alex Stephens both drove in runs with single to left, and reliever Patrick Dietz slammed the door shut with a pair of scoreless frames.
