Blue Hawks drop series, 3-1, to Waldorf

Dickinson, N.D. – Dickinson State dropped their final NSAA home series, 3-1, to Waldorf University over the weekend. Waldorf swept day one before the teams split on day two.

Game One – WU 7 DSU 3 (8 innings)

Waldorf scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to pull away in a thriller in game one. DSU took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a run scoring double play by Wyatt Wilharm.

Waldorf tied the game in the third after scoring from second on a passed ball and took the lead in the sixth inning with a two-out single to left field. DSU answered right back however, as Keanu Calamayan pushed a run across with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly.

The roller coaster continued in the top of the seventh inning when a bases-loaded walk pushed across the go-ahead run for Waldorf, but down to their last strike in the seventh, DSU got an RBI double from Jace Buchanan to force extra innings.

Starting pitcher Trent Richter went 6 strong innings, allowing just two runs (one earned), on seven hits but settled for a no-decision.

Game Two – WU 5 DSU 3

A four-run fourth inning by Waldorf was the difference in the game as the Blue Hawks fell, 5-3, in game two on Friday.

DSU was held to just four hits in the loss, with all of them coming in the first two innings. The Blue Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after back-to-back RBI singles by Wyatt Wilharm and Carlos Molina Jr., but a bunt single to lead of the second inning by Luke Clinton was the last hit of the game.

Game Three – DSU 10 WU 3

DSU hammered out 11 hits, including five home runs, to take game three on Saturday, 10-3.

The Blue Hawks got home runs from Jace Buchanan, Wyatt Wilharm, Carlos Molina Jr., Mathias Dufner, and Nathaniel Jilek to go along with a complete game gem from Jacob Scully to earn the win.

Scully went all seven innings and allowed three runs on six hits while striking out four and walking four to earn the victory.

Jilek broke the game open in the fourth inning with a two-out grand slam to make it 7-3 and two batters later Buchanan homered to make it 9-3.

Wilharm and Molina Jr. hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning to get the offense rolling.

Game Four – WU 16 DSU 6

Waldorf scored 15 of their runs from the fifth inning on to cruise to the game four victory. Dickinson State got home runs from seniors Mathias Dufner and Clay Prell, but the Blue Hawk offense could not keep up with a Warrior team that gathered 21 hits over the nine innings.

Starter Tate Williams went five innings and allowed two runs on six hits, but was forced to settle for the no-decision after the late offensive explosion by Waldorf.
