Blue Hawks knock off Mayville State in non-conference action

Dickinson, N.D. – Dickinson State came from behind three different times as they used 15 hits and 10 runs to knock off Mayville State, 10-7, in non-conference midweek action.

After the Comets jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a home run in the top of the first inning, the Blue Hawks answered back in the bottom half, getting an RBI single from Wyatt Wilharm after Jace Buchanan doubled with one out.

MSU then scored single runs in both the second and third innings to take a 3-1 lead, but a mammoth home run from Mathias Dufner got DSU to within one in the bottom of the fourth.

Back-to-back singles by Nathaniel Jilek and Alberto Nieto put runners at the corners to start the fifth inning for DSU, and sacrifice bunt by Buchanan scored Jilek and tied the game at 4-4. Wilharm followed with an RBI single, and the Blue Hawks had their first lead of the game, 5-4.

The lead didn't last long however, as the Comets responded with three runs in the top half of the sixth inning to take a two-run lead.

Dickinson State once again had an answer, getting RBI base hits from Kadin Finders and Nieto in the bottom half of the inning to force another tie.

The back-and-forth battle continued as Mayville State took a 7-6 lead with a solo home run in the seventh inning and held DSU scoreless in the home half to stay in front after seven.

Moses Dokes worked a perfect eighth inning for the Blue Hawks to stay within striking distance, and the offense delivered once again.

After a strikeout to start the inning, Finders and Jilek worked back-to-back walks to put the tying run in scoring position for the top of the order. Nieto followed with a bunt single to load the bases, and Buchanan hit a high pop up that fell safely in shallow left field for a game-tying RBI single. A sacrifice fly from Wilharm scored Jilek from third to give DSU the lead again, and Carlos Molina Jr. drove in an insurance run with a single to center field. The final Blue Hawk run scored on a passed ball to make it 10-7.

Trent Chavez worked around a two-out error in the top of the ninth inning to slam the door shut and earn his third save of the season.
