Blue Hawks drop pair to Jamestown in Tucson

Tucson, Ariz. – Dickinson State dropped a pair of games to in-state rival University of Jamestown in Tucson on Saturday. The Blue Hawks dropped a thriller, 16-15, in game one before dropping game two, 7-2.

Game One – UJ 16 DSU 15

The two teams combined for 31 runs on 30 hits, 13 for extra bases, in one of the wildest games of the young baseball season. Cameron Erickson (4-6, 2 2B, 3B, 3 RBI) and Keanu Calamayan (4-6, 3 2B, SB, 3 RBI) led the way for Dickinson State, and John-Michael Gonzalez Jr. and Carlos Molina Jr. both added three hits of their own in the loss.

DSU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after starter Jonathan Lerma retired UJ in order to start the game, but Jamestown responded to score 14 runs in the next two innings to take a commanding lead. The Blue Hawks scored one run in each of those innings to make it 14-5 UJ after three innings.

From that point forward, DSU dominated. The Blue Hawks outscored the Jimmies 10-2 over the final four frames, but the early deficit was too much to overcome as the tying, and winning, runs were stranded on the bases during a four-run seventh inning for DSU.

Game Two UJ 7 DSU 2

DSU was held to just two runs, both scored in the sixth inning, on six hits and Jamestown took game two in a much more traditional fashion.

UJ scored four runs in the second inning, and added one more in the fifth, sixth, and seventh, to earn the win. Dickinson State struggled to get any momentum offensively as they struck out 13 times and walked only once.

Wyatt Wilharm went 2-2 with a walk to lead the offense and Calamayan added his fourth double of the day during the two-run sixth inning.
