Blue Hawks drop a pair of high scoring games to Mayville State

DICKINSON, N.D. – Dickinson State enjoyed their best offensive day of the fall but were outslugged by Mayville State as the Comets took both games of the Wednesday doubleheader at Dakota Community Bank & Trust Ballpark.

GAME ONE – MSU 10 DSU 7

The Blue Hawks got the scoring started in game one, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second inning. After Alex Stephens walked, and Clay Prell singled, with two outs, Jace Buchanan drove in his first run of his DSU career with a first pitch single to right field. A hit by pitch and an error scored the next Blue Hawk run to make it 2-0, and Buchanan scored on a passed ball to make it 3-0. Keanu Calamayan capped the scoring with a two-RBI single to left field scoring Alberto Nieto and Kaiden Reeve, to make it 5-0 Dickinson State.

The lead wouldn't last long, however, as the Comets responded with five runs of their own in the top of the third to tie the game. Dickinson State answered right back, getting a lead off home run from John-Michael Gonzalez Jr. to start the home half of the third, and padded their lead with another Buchanan RBI single to make it 7-5 Blue Hawks.

The score stayed that way for an inning, but the Comets exploded for another five-run inning in the fifth to take a 10-7 lead that they would hold for the rest of the game.

Clay Prell led the DSU offense in game one, going 4-4 with four singles, while Gonzalez Jr and Buchanan each had multi-hit games as well.

GAME TWO – MSU 11 DSU 10

Mayville State jumped out to a huge lead in game two, 10-3 after two and a half innings of play, and held on for an 11-10 victory.

After the Comets put up six runs in the top of the first inning, Gonzalez Jr. got half of them back with his second home run of the day, a three-run shot to left-center field to get DSU back in the game.

Trailing 11-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Blue Hawks started their rally. Gonzalez Jr. singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then scored after stealing third and moving home on an error by the MSU catcher. A Jace Buchanan sacrifice fly scored Lane Neill, who singled earlier in the inning, to make it 11-7 Comets.

After Jonathan Lerma threw a scoreless top of the seventh for DSU, the Blue Hawks had one last chance to make a furious rally. The inning started with an error allowing Calamayan to reach and then a walk to Wilharm gave DSU two runners on with no one out. The game briefly went into a rain delay for about 10 minutes as a storm passed through, but the teams were able to continue. Gonzalez Jr. loaded the bases with an infield single to bring the tying run the plate for DSU, and a walk by Carlos Molina Jr. made it 11-8 Mayville State still with the bases loaded and nobody out. Prell drove in another run with a groundout to first, and Neill got the Blue Hawks to within one with a sacrifice fly, but the tying run was stranded at first base as MSU was able to force a ground out to end the game.
