FOREST CITY, Iowa – Dickinson State split with Waldorf University in an NSAA doubleheader on Monday. DSU won the first game, 8-7, before falling, 5-1, in game two.

GAME 1

Dawson Cortese, Kael Richards, and Wyatt Wilharm all had multi-hit games as Dickinson State edged out Waldorf, 8-7, in a back-and-forth game one.

Balas Buckmaster got the scoring started in the first inning, driving home Matthew Krieger who was pinch running for Derrick Calvillo, who walked to lead off the game. An RBI double and a passed ball put Waldorf out in front, 2-1, but the Blue Hawks tied the game again in the top of the fifth inning when Richards drove home Buckmaster with a two-out RBI single to right.

The Warriors responded with back-to-back home runs in the bottom half of the inning to regain a two-run lead, but it wouldn't last long, as DSU again had an answer. Alberto Nieto walked to start the sixth inning, stole second, and scored on an error on a Calvillo bunt to get DSU to within one, 4-3. A sacrifice bunt by Keanu Calamayan moved Krieger, running for Calvillo, to second, and then a passed ball gave DSU a runner at third with one out. Buckmaster drilled a ball deep to center field but had to settle for a sacrifice fly after an impressive catch high on the wall by the Warriors. With the game tied, Cortese singled to right and Wilharm followed with a two-run blast to left field, putting the Blue Hawks in front again 6-4.

The Warriors fought back in the bottom of the sixth inning, tying the game on a one-out two-RBI double, but relief pitcher Richie Cortese ended the threat by getting back-to-back groundouts stranding a runner at third base. The back-and-forth battle continued as DSU got back out in front when Nieto scored on a passed ball and Cortese singled home Calamayan with two outs to give the Blue Hawks an 8-6 advantage.

The Warriors got a run back in the eighth, but Cooper Van Luchene escaped without any further harm and close Gabe Lundbeck slammed the door shut in the ninth, earning the save.

GAME 2

Wyatt Wilharm hit his second home run of the day, but the Blue Hawks were held to just four hits as they fell, 5-1, in game two on Monday.

Wilharm gave the Blue Hawks a 1-0 lead with a lead off home run in the second inning, but four runs from the Warriors in the bottom half of the inning gave Waldorf a lead they wouldn't surrender. The biggest Blue Hawk chance came in the sixth inning when Wilharm walked with two outs and Kael Richards followed with a double, but Wilharm was throw out trying to score on the play ending the threat.
