Dominant defensive second half leads Blue Hawk women to victory

Dickinson, N.D. – After twenty minutes it looked like Dickinson State would be locked in a tight battle with Canadian foe Briercrest College the whole way, but a smothering defensive effort held the visitors to just 14 second half points as DSU ran away with a 72-48 victory.

Katherine Fox and Samantha Oase had 13 points each to lead the Blue Hawks, as Oase narrowly missed out on a double-double with nine rebounds after being held scoreless in the first half.

Neither squad took great care of the ball on the evening, with DSU turning it over 23 times and BC coughing it up 24. Dickinson State dominated on the boards, outrebounding the Clippers 51-28 for the game.

Trailing by one at the half, the Blue Hawks came out of the break on fire defensively. They continuously forced Briercrest into turnovers and tough shots allowing their wide rebounding margin to help grow their lead. The DSU defense held BC to just 7 points in each of the final two quarters to coast to victory.

Tinley Pierson chipped in 12 points for DSU while Heather LaBree led the Blue Hawk reserves with 8. Whitney Edwards was the lone Blue Hawk with double digit rebounds, pulling down 11 while scoring 5 points.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow, Saturday January 6, at 1 pm mountain in Scott Gym.
